Charlene White: ITV News Presenter, Loose Women Anchor and Author

Charlene White is a British television broadcaster, journalist and presenter best known for presenting ITV News programmes and for anchoring ITV’s daytime show Loose Women. In April 2014 she became the first Black woman to present ITV News at Ten — a milestone often quoted in short biographies and rarely explained in context.

That context matters. White spent years in BBC radio and regional television, joined ITN in 2008, worked through ITV’s daytime and regional bulletins, and only then took the News at Ten chair. Since 2019 she has been lead presenter of ITV News London’s main 6pm programme, while also becoming one of the most recognisable faces on Loose Women.

Early life and education in the UK

White was born in Greenwich, London, on 22 June 1980, to Jamaican parents. She has a brother and a sister. She attended Riverston School and Blackheath High School in south-east London, and graduated from the London College of Communication with a degree in journalism; the college was formerly the London College of Printing, which is why some older profiles use that name.

Two details in competing biographies need correcting here. First, her date of birth is 22 June, not 23 June as some low-quality biography sites state. Second, her early career is often shortened to “ITV presenter”, which hides the BBC years set out below.

From BBC radio to ITN and ITV News

White joined BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat and BBC Radio 1Xtra as a reporter in 2002. In 2005 she teamed up with DJ G Money as presenter of 1Xtra’s news, magazine and documentary programme TX. She also worked at BBC Look East, on Radio 5 Live’s Morning Reports, on BBC Three’s 60 Seconds, presented a late-night talk show on BBC London 94.9, and worked as a reporter and producer for ITV News Meridian in Kent.

In 2008 she joined ITN as a newscaster for ITV News at 5:30, and presented short opts for ITV News London within GMTV, later Daybreak. She gave up those early-morning roles in October 2012 but remained a presenter of ITV News London’s main 6pm programme. On 9 April 2014 she became the first Black woman to present ITV News at Ten, presenting it occasionally until October 2015 and returning as an occasional presenter in later years. She also presented ITV Weekend News until 2019 and continues as a relief presenter of ITV Lunchtime News and ITV Evening News.

On 30 May 2019 she was announced as lead presenter of ITV News London’s main 6pm programme — the London bulletin she still anchors, and the role many short profiles bury beneath the Loose Women credit.

Loose Women: from guest to anchor, and the all-Black panel

White made her debut as a guest presenter of Loose Women on 12 August 2020. She returned on 11 January 2021, when it was announced she would become a regular presenter following Andrea McLean’s departure. She has described Loose Women not as a step away from news, but as an extension of it: a different way of giving people information, in conversation rather than in a bulletin.

The panel moment most often missing from competitor pages is the show’s first all-Black panel. White, Brenda Edwards, Judi Love and Kéllé Bryan became the first all-Black panel in the show’s 25-year history. The special won a Royal Television Society award and was nominated for a BAFTA.

In November 2022 she appeared in series 22 of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, entering on day one and becoming the first celebrity to be evicted, on day 13.

Documentaries, children’s television and the book

White’s documentary work is the second major gap in competing pages, which often stop at “ITV News and Loose Women”. In 2021 she fronted her own primetime ITV documentary, Charlene White: Empire’s Child, tracing her family’s place within the British Empire. The project led directly to her book: after exploring land her ancestors had bought after emancipation, she wanted to ask more widely what “home” means.

She also co-hosted Has George Floyd Changed Britain? alongside Sir Trevor McDonald, and created IRL with Team Charlene, an ITV series of short films, animation and music dealing with racism in the UK and how it affects young people. It won a Royal Television Society award for Best Children’s Programme.

Her debut non-fiction book, No Place Like Home, was published in September 2024. It weaves her own story as a Jamaican Londoner with the perspectives of eight individuals whose understanding of home has been shaped by family, conflict and displacement. She is also a regular columnist for the i paper and mentors aspiring journalists.

Impartiality, the poppy, and abuse on screen

In 2013 White faced racist and sexist abuse after choosing not to wear a Remembrance Day poppy on screen. She explained in an ITV statement that she supported the armed forces — her father and uncle had served in the RAF and the army — but preferred to be neutral and impartial on screen so that one charity did not feel less favoured than another. She said she wore a poppy in her private life on Armistice Day and donated every year to the Poppy Appeal.

Family, loss — and the story competitors get wrong

White lives in south London. She met her partner Andy Woodfield at a friend’s party in 2015, and they have two children, born in August 2017 and October 2019.

Her mother died of bowel cancer in 2002, when White was 21. What is not true — and what some older biography pages invented — is a story that her father died when she was a child. Her father, Denniston White, died in October 2025. White announced his death herself that month, saying the family had decided to be open about the circumstances rather than hide their grief, and that the family was raising money for Black Minds Matter UK. A year later she wrote about the worst 12 months of her life.

What competitors get wrong or leave out

Most competing Charlene White pages copy the same short summary, promise a salary or net worth figure they cannot source, and stop before her actual programmes. This article deliberately does the opposite:

  1. Correct date of birth — 22 June 1980, not 23 June.
  2. Full BBC-to-ITN path — Newsbeat and 1Xtra in 2002, TX in 2005, BBC Look East and BBC London, then ITN in 2008 and ITV News London lead presenter in 2019.
  3. Documentaries and book — Empire’s Child, Has George Floyd Changed Britain?, IRL with Team Charlene and No Place Like Home, with what each is about.
  4. All-Black Loose Women panel — with its Royal Television Society win and BAFTA nomination, not just a Loose Women credit.
  5. Family history, corrected — her mother’s death in 2002 and her father’s death in October 2025, with no invented childhood-death story and no invented salary, net worth or height figure.
