Nadia El-Nakla: Dundee Councillor, Psychotherapist and Depute Lord Provost Story

Nadia El-Nakla is a Scottish politician and psychotherapist who has served as a Dundee City councillor for the West End ward since May 2022 and who was appointed Depute Lord Provost of Dundee in October 2025. She is also the wife of Humza Yousaf, the former First Minister of Scotland — but that is the least interesting thing about her public career, and it is the thing most online coverage gets wrong by treating it as the whole story.

Early life and education

El-Nakla was born in Dundee in 1984, to a Palestinian father and a Scottish mother. Dundee is not an incidental birthplace in her story: it is the city she has lived in, worked in and now represents, and her council career is a Dundee career in a way that a Westminster or Holyrood career would not be.

She studied at the University of Dundee and later gained a Master of Science degree in Counselling from Abertay University, also in Dundee. Many politicians talk about mental health; El-Nakla is one of the few who arrived in politics already qualified to practise in it.

One point of precision is worth making at the start. Some low-quality profile sites give El-Nakla an exact date of birth in 1983. Her reference entry gives only the year 1984, and the two cannot both be right. This article therefore states the year only, and no exact date. Pages that print a full birthday for her are inventing a precision the sources do not support.

A career in counselling

Before she was elected, El-Nakla worked as a caseworker for Shona Robison, the Member of the Scottish Parliament for Dundee City East — the unglamorous core of constituency politics, and the best possible training for a future councillor. Alongside that work she built her counselling practice: she is a qualified psychotherapist and counsellor, a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, working across addiction, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, eating disorders, bereavement and suicidal ideation.

Election to Dundee City Council

In the Scottish local elections of May 2022 El-Nakla stood as the SNP candidate in Dundee City Council’s West End Ward 3, succeeding Richard McCready, and she was elected on 5 May 2022. As a councillor she has served as the council’s equalities spokesperson — a portfolio covering how council services reach disabled residents, ethnic minority communities, and people on low incomes, and how the council itself recruits and promotes.

Depute Lord Provost

On 27 October 2025 Dundee City Council appointed El-Nakla as Depute Lord Provost, following the resignation of her predecessor in the role, and she was formally invested with the chain of office at the council meeting on 17 November 2025, as recorded in the council’s own minutes. The Depute Lord Provost is the council’s deputy civic head: the second citizen of Dundee, who deputises for the Lord Provost at civic events, chairs meetings in the Lord Provost’s absence, and represents the city on formal occasions. It is a significant step, and it is also the fact most competitor coverage misses, because most of it was written before October 2025 and has never been updated.

The Humza Yousaf connection

El-Nakla married Humza Yousaf in 2019. Yousaf went on to become First Minister of Scotland and leader of the SNP, serving from March 2023 to May 2024, and his career is covered in his own Presslix biography, which this article links to below. The connection is real, and it is the reason this article exists in the relation series — but it is not the substance of El-Nakla’s career, and this article treats it as a connection, not as a definition.

That distinction is also why this article says nothing about Yousaf’s previous marriage or about his parents, and nothing about any children. Yousaf’s former wife is a private individual with no current public career, his parents are private individuals, and children are private minors. None of them is the subject of this article, and none is named in it. The same restraint applies to El-Nakla’s own earlier life: this article records her marriage to Yousaf in 2019 and says nothing further about earlier relationships, which are not a matter of public record relevant to her council career.

What competitor biographies get wrong or leave out

  1. They invent an exact date of birth. Low-quality sites print a full birthday in 1983. The reference entry gives only the year 1984. This article states the year only, because that is all the reliable sources support.
  2. They stop at “Yousaf’s wife”. El-Nakla’s counselling qualification, her casework for Shona Robison, her equalities portfolio and her Depute Lord Provost appointment are all part of a public career in their own right. A biography that mentions none of them is not a biography.
  3. They miss the 2025 appointment. The Depute Lord Provost appointment of October 2025, confirmed in Dundee City Council’s own minutes, is the most recent fact in her career, and most online profiles predate it.
  4. They confuse her with other people. El-Nakla is sometimes conflated in search results with unrelated figures, and her husband’s earlier marriage is sometimes imported into her biography. Neither belongs here.
  5. They invent money and personal detail. No reliable net worth or salary figure exists for El-Nakla, and personal details beyond what reference sources confirm are not published here.
