Emma Paton: Sky Sports Darts Presenter, Career, Athletics Background and UK Coverage

Emma Paton is one of the most familiar faces on Sky Sports in the UK, and the presenter most viewers now associate with darts at Alexandra Palace. She did not arrive at that desk overnight. Her route runs from national-level athletics, through a journalism degree and seven years behind the camera at Sky, to live studio presenting, Transfer Deadline Day, the US Open, WWE and, finally, the sport that has come to define her on screen.

Much of her career was built out of sight: before fronting the World Darts Championship, she wrote, produced, sub-edited and worked on the news desk — experience that still shows in her calm live presenting.

Early life, athletics and education

Paton grew up in Surrey and was a gifted young athlete. She competed nationally over 400 metres and dreamed of representing Great Britain at the Olympic Games. Years of injuries ended that ambition. She has described the experience plainly, saying she fell short of her dreams but that it was okay, and that she then turned her attention to making it on screen at Sky.

Her education kept sport at the centre. She studied Sport and Exercise Science at Loughborough University and completed a master’s degree in Sports Journalism at St Mary’s University in Twickenham. While studying for that master’s, she got her first professional journalism job on the news desk for the British Olympic Association during the London 2012 Olympics, and also worked for the Sports Gazette, Sportsbeat and sportsister.com.

Athletics also gave her a screen credit: a cameo in Fast Girls (2012), playing a Ukrainian relay runner alongside Lily James and Noel Clarke. She has been on a start line herself, and understands performing alone in front of a crowd.

Joining Sky Sports and seven years behind the camera

Paton joined Sky Sports in 2012 as a sports journalist, straight out of St Mary’s. For around seven years she worked behind the camera as part of the production team, writing for the Sky Sports website and app and learning how live sport is put together. She has spoken about working full-time on the breakfast show on Sky Sports News, with very early starts, while still trying to fit training around the job.

That long apprenticeship is one of the things competitor biographies flatten into a single line — yet it is why she can move between studio and location, breaking news and long event coverage, without losing the thread of a story.

She moved into a full-time on-screen role around 2019 and quickly became a regular presence on Sky Sports News, fronting Good Morning Sports Fans and becoming a key part of Sky’s award-winning Transfer Deadline Day coverage.

Darts: from Blackpool to Alexandra Palace

Darts is now the sport most closely linked with Paton, and it is also where her story is most often told too thinly. She presented for the Sky Sports darts team in Blackpool in 2021, and her agency lists her as the lead presenter of Sky’s darts coverage since 2020. Other coverage dates her lead role for the World Darts Championship itself to 2022, when she took over from Laura Woods as Sky’s lead presenter for the tournament. Either way, by the early 2020s she was the presenter at the heart of Sky’s darts output.

That output is large. She has hosted all of Sky’s major darts tournaments, including the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in December and January, Premier League Darts and the World Matchplay. Her agency notes that the 2024 World Darts Championship was the most viewed non-football event on record on Sky Sports. She also co-hosts Sky Sports’ Love The Darts podcast, reflecting on tournaments with former players and analysts.

Darts crowds are loud, funny and sometimes rowdy, and her job is to hold the broadcast together without dampening the atmosphere. Paton has talked about how darts has taken over her life beyond television, following the ProTour and European Tour, and crowds have been reported cheering when she appears on the arena’s big screen, including at Premier League Darts in Rotterdam in 2025.

The Luke Littler era has made that job bigger still: Paton has discussed how his teenage run to the World Championship final captured the public imagination and drove viewing figures sharply higher.

Beyond darts: tennis, WWE, NFL and esports

A second gap in most competitor pages is that they treat Paton as only a darts presenter. Her Sky career is much wider. She is a key figure in Sky’s live tennis coverage, presenting and reporting each year at the US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York, and interviewing the top tennis players.

She has covered WWE, reporting from New York for the brand’s first ever all-women’s pay-per-view event, Evolution, after a chance meeting at a Royal Albert Hall press event where WWE executive Triple H offered her the exclusive story. She has covered NFL events, and she is part of Sky’s esports talent roster, reporting on the inaugural ePremier League and the 2019 FIFA eWorld Cup Grand Final at London’s O2 Arena. She was also a roving reporter at the 2018 Athletics World Cup, and in 2019 she hosted a fireside chat at Web Summit in Lisbon.

Paton is therefore not a single-sport presenter who happened to land darts, but a multi-sport live broadcaster trusted with Sky’s biggest live occasions.

Mentoring and advocacy

Away from live coverage, Paton is an ambassador for Paddy Power and Winmau, and for St Mary’s University in London. Her agency describes her as a mentor and advocate for young women aspiring to build careers in the sport industry — a role that mirrors her own route: a journalism degree, a news-desk job at a major event, years in production, and only then a regular on-screen role.

What competitors get wrong or leave out

Most competing pages do four things this article avoids. First, they promise personal details in the headline — age, husband, net worth, height — then publish figures that contradict each other, without a source. This article omits those details and says why.

Second, they stop at darts, rarely listing the US Open, WWE’s first women’s pay-per-view, NFL, esports, the 2018 Athletics World Cup or Web Summit, even though those assignments explain her range.

Third, they skip the seven years behind the camera and the London 2012 news-desk job, the foundation of her career. Fourth, they miss the Olympic dream ended by injury and the Fast Girls cameo — the details that explain her empathy for athletes performing alone under pressure.
