Darren McCaffrey: Sky News Presenter, Career and UK Politics Explained

Darren McCaffrey: Sky News Presenter, Career and UK Politics Explained
Darren McCaffrey is a British political journalist and television presenter whose career has followed some of the biggest stories in modern UK politics, from the coalition years and the Brexit referendum to the 2024 general election. He is best known today as a Sky News presenter of Politics Hub, the weeknight Westminster programme, after a career that has taken him from Northern Ireland to Westminster, Brussels, Dublin and a high-profile spell at GB News.
What makes his story unusual is its breadth. Few British political broadcasters have worked as a Westminster correspondent, an Ireland correspondent, a Brussels-based European political editor and a launch presenter for a new national channel, then returned to the broadcaster where they started. That is also why he is searched for under several job titles: at different points he has genuinely held all of them.

From Fermanagh to Westminster
McCaffrey is originally from Fermanagh, in Northern Ireland, close to the border with the Republic of Ireland. Growing up on the border gave him a first-hand understanding of the issues that later dominated the Brexit negotiations: trade, the border and the peace process.
He began his journalism career at the BBC before joining Sky News in 2009, where he became a Westminster-based political correspondent. He covered the coalition government, general elections, leadership contests and the long build-up to the EU referendum and its aftermath. Euronews later described him as a journalist with a reputation for breaking stories and conducting fearless live interviews, often on air for hours as major stories developed.
The Brussels Years and the Move to Dublin
After the Brexit referendum, McCaffrey followed the story to Brussels, covering EU Council summits and reporting from the European Parliament in Strasbourg and other European capitals, giving him a European perspective many Westminster-only reporters lacked.
In June 2017, Sky News announced a new Dublin bureau, with McCaffrey, then its UK Political Correspondent, becoming Dublin Correspondent, based permanently in the Irish capital. Sky’s head of news, John Ryley, called him a great talent, and McCaffrey said Brexit presented both threats and opportunities for Ireland, and that growing up on the border gave him the chance to reflect the concerns of people there.
Political Editor at Euronews
In September 2018, McCaffrey left Sky News to become Political Editor at Euronews, based in Brussels, leading political coverage for a pan-European broadcaster as Europe headed towards the 2019 European elections.
At Euronews he led Brussels political coverage, reporting on the biggest stories from across Europe and appearing regularly on its nightly political strand, Raw Politics, when it launched that autumn. Competitor biographies often skip this period or reduce it to a single line, but it is one of the most distinctive chapters of his career: few British political journalists have held a senior editorial role at a European broadcaster.
GB News Political Editor, 2021–2023
In 2021, McCaffrey joined GB News as part of its original political team, becoming its Political Editor and Presenter ahead of the channel’s launch on 13 June 2021. He presented The Briefing: PM, its weekday afternoon political programme, and led much of its Westminster coverage.
McCaffrey departed GB News in 2023. His own public explanation was that he wanted to step away from political reporting for a period and travel, after years in demanding Westminster roles. He was succeeded as GB News Political Editor by Christopher Hope, formerly of The Telegraph. It is worth stating this plainly because online speculation about his departure has circulated since: the reliable public account is that he chose to leave and take a break, not that he was dismissed.
Return to Sky News and Politics Hub
In 2024, McCaffrey returned to Sky News in time for the general election campaign. His return was quickly in the news itself: in May 2024, as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak launched the Conservative campaign at London’s ExCeL Centre and confirmed a 4 July election, McCaffrey and his crew were escorted out moments before Sunak spoke. He explained live on air that access was restricted under pooled broadcast arrangements, and continued reporting as he was led out.
Since his return, McCaffrey has been a regular presence in Sky News political programming. He presents Politics Hub, the weeknight 7pm programme from Westminster, introducing the day’s stories, questioning ministers and shadow ministers, and chairing panel discussions. Episodes presented by him in 2025 covered subjects ranging from Budgets and welfare reform to foreign policy crises, digital identity and prisons.
What Is Darren McCaffrey’s Job Title Now?
Search results give different answers, so an honest explanation is better than a forced one. He is most accurately described today as a Sky News presenter, principally of Politics Hub. Some recent material also calls him a political correspondent, reflecting his reporting background, and one 2025 podcast listing calls him a presenter and political editor. Sky News’s senior political editor role is a separate post, and this article does not claim he holds it.
The confusion is understandable: he has held the title of political editor twice before, at Euronews and at GB News, and now presents a political programme. The most accurate description is therefore the one in this article’s title: Sky News presenter, with a political correspondent’s background. Any biography still calling him GB News Political Editor in the present tense is out of date: he left in 2023.
One further confusion is worth clearing up: he should not be confused with Barry McCaffrey, a Northern Ireland journalist associated with the documentary No Stone Unturned. They are different journalists.
Why Darren McCaffrey Matters in UK Political Broadcasting
McCaffrey matters because his career maps the last fifteen years of British political journalism: Westminster during the coalition and the referendum, Brussels and Dublin during the Brexit negotiations, a new challenger channel, then a return to rolling news for a general election and a change of government. His experience across three broadcasters and three capitals — London, Brussels and Dublin — lets him present Politics Hub with context rather than just commentary.
