Geraint Vincent: ITV News Correspondent, Career and International Reporting Explained

Geraint Vincent: ITV News Correspondent, Career and International Reporting Explained
For more than two decades, Geraint Vincent has been one of the most recognisable faces of ITV News. He is the kind of correspondent viewers meet at the sharp end of a story: embedded with troops, standing in a town after an earthquake, reporting from a war zone, or presenting a flagship bulletin when the news will not wait. His career has moved from regional journalism in Wales to major international stories, and that range — reporter, foreign correspondent, special correspondent and relief presenter — sets him apart.
Vincent joined ITN, the company that produces ITV News, in April 2002. Since then he has reported on the Soham murders, the war in Iraq, famine in Niger, major sporting events, the Haiti earthquake, British military operations in Afghanistan, and the complexities of the Middle East. He later served as ITV News at Ten’s special correspondent and then as ITV News’ Middle East Correspondent, before returning to a broader correspondent role. He has also presented ITV News bulletins and reported for ITV’s current affairs strand, Tonight, and its international programme, On Assignment.

Early Life and Education
Vincent spent part of his youth in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, where he attended Newcastle-under-Lyme High School in 1985 and 1986 and played trumpet in the school band. He returned to the school in 2009 to present prizes. After school he studied history at the University of East Anglia, then trained in journalism at the University of Wales, Cardiff — a combination that gave him both the historical context and the practical reporting skills that shaped his later foreign work.
Starting Out: BBC Wales and HTV
On graduating, Vincent joined BBC Wales as a reporter in Cardiff, reporting for BBC Wales Today. From there he moved to HTV, where he became Wales Tonight’s political correspondent, covering the Welsh Assembly. Explaining devolution clearly to a general audience was demanding, accountable journalism, and that experience carried into his later national and international work.
Joining ITN in 2002
Vincent joined ITN in April 2002 as a news correspondent for ITV News, just as British television news was about to be dominated by war, terrorism and major domestic trials. His early assignments included the Soham murders, the war in Iraq, in which he was embedded with troops, famine in Niger, the Northern Bank robbery, the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, the 2007 Rugby World Cup, and the Beijing 2008 Olympics. The breadth is the point: he moved between crime, sport, humanitarian disaster and war, learning to adapt to very different settings while keeping the same standard — be on the ground, talk to the people affected, and explain what the pictures mean.
Reporting From the Front Line in Afghanistan
One of the most demanding chapters of his career came with British forces in Afghanistan. He reported from the front line of Operation Panther’s Claw in the summer of 2009 and Operation Moshtarak in early 2010. Frontline reporting is physically and editorially difficult: access is limited, danger is real, and the story must be told without becoming propaganda or spectacle. Like his earlier embedded reporting in Iraq, Vincent’s Afghanistan work focused on soldiers and civilians caught in the fighting, rather than on maps and military jargon alone.
Disasters and Breaking News
Vincent has also been a go-to reporter for fast-moving disasters. He presented ITV Evening News and ITV News at Ten live from the heart of the so-called Big Freeze in early 2010, was part of the ITV News team covering the Haiti earthquake that year, and in October 2010 reported live on the Copiapó mining accident in Chile, when trapped miners were brought to the surface after weeks underground. These assignments show a different skill: live, unscripted reporting in difficult conditions, where a correspondent must be accurate while events are still unfolding.
Middle East Correspondent and Special Correspondent for News at Ten
After his general correspondent years, Vincent became special correspondent for ITV News at Ten, then ITV News’ Middle East Correspondent. The Middle East role placed him at the centre of one of the world’s most closely watched regions, where reporting requires care with language, context and competing claims. His long-form On Assignment work included a report on house demolitions in East Jerusalem told through a single family, a film on Bucharest’s stray dog crisis, and a report on the uncertain future of captive lions in South Africa as its government considered phasing out lion farming for trophy hunting. The approach is consistent: start with people, then widen the lens to the policy and history behind their situation.
Presenting: Relief Newscaster and ITV News London
Vincent’s newscasting career began with presenting duties on the now-defunct ITV News Channel. In January 2006 he became a relief newscaster for various ITV News bulletins, and in August 2017 he became a relief presenter for ITV News London. He has presented ITV News at 6:30, ITV News at Ten and ITV Evening News, including a widely noted News at Ten in which he announced the death of his ITV News colleague Emily Morgan, the health and science editor, after a short illness. Viewers praised his handling of that tribute. During Election 2010, he also closed ITV News at Ten with “And Finally…” stories as its ‘Campaign Wives Correspondent’.
Tonight and Long-Form Reporting
Beyond daily news, Vincent has reported for Tonight, ITV’s current affairs strand. His films have tackled policing on camera, with exclusive access during major operations, and road safety: in a 2022 Tonight film, Who Rules Britain’s Roads?, he investigated Highway Code changes giving greater priority to pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists, speaking to someone who had nearly lost their life on Britain’s roads. Programme listings also show him presenting a Tonight film on artificial intelligence, jobs and privacy. That range helps explain his longevity at ITV News.
Recent Work and Why He Still Matters
Vincent remains listed among ITV News’ general news correspondents, and recent programme transcripts credit him with reports on subjects including the Covid contracts inquiry and the war in Ukraine, where his reporting has centred on civilians living under bombardment. What many competitor biographies miss is exactly this continuity. Most online profiles of Vincent stop in about 2010 or 2017, repeating the same early-career facts and leaving the impression that his story ended there. In reality, his career continued through Tonight and On Assignment films, ITV News London presenting, and recent flagship bulletin reporting. With more than twenty years at ITN, Vincent is firmly in that experienced group.
